“Long Grove is not far from home but whenever I’m there, I feel like I’m in a different state. Everyone is very friendly. I like the boutiques. The horse-drawn carriage ride is nice. Check your calendar for different events!”
Believe in the holiday magic. Without it, there is nothing but empty boxes and discarded tissue paper. More than ever, we need to remember what brought us so much joy during our favorite time of year. It might be an unexpected gesture of kindness, a memorable song playing, or the excitement of being the first to see snow falling at the perfect time. Reconnect with each other, and get back in touch with the simplicity of the pure joy of the season. Historic downtown Long Grove will take you back to your childhood—and even before then—to a time only glimpsed from a snow globe.
“There are lots of unique shops in Long Grove. I like Ma & Pa’s Candy and The Olive Tap best. The horse-drawn carriage ride is unexpected fun!”
Vintage Holidays in Long Grove is one of many special events in the historic downtown. Many visitors come from near and far specifically for each event or to revisit this scenic location ideally suited for its celebrated boutiques, shops and restaurants. Some fronts come and go while others have been fixtures for generations. The quaint village setting resembles something out of a favorite classic film. It’s quite an experience to stroll through the vintage streets and step into the historic buildings, each containing serendipitous works of art, crafts, local wines and olive oils, unique clothing, old-time candy, vintage furnishings, antiques, highly-rated cuisine, and so much more.
December in Long Grove adds horse-drawn carriage rides, merchant open houses and promotions, holiday caroling, and appearances from Santa Claus. I did see Santa Claus. And I heard him. He appeared to be the genuine article. Santa was very good with everyone and even sounded like he should. His beard was the real deal. For a moment, I wondered if I should take a turn on the bench. But then my wish had already come true. Today was the perfect day to relive the holiday magic that I always remember so well but had not experienced for many years until today. Thank you, Santa and Long Grove!
“I drive past historic downtown Long Grove on my weekday commutes. I don’t often make that turn but when I do, I feel that it’s like home. From the famous covered bridge to the upbeat and friendly shop owners, Long Grove is a great place to escape. The full calendar of events will keep us coming back for more!”
My mom and Lisa shared their thoughts on the day with me. My mom: “Long Grove is not far from home but whenever I’m there, I feel like I’m in a different state. Everyone is very friendly. Now I know what life is like in a snow globe. I had thought this before but now I know for sure. Everyone is happy. People embrace winter. They come together to enjoy the warmth of the magic in the season. Life might be simple, but there are less obstructions and distractions in the way of experiencing the pure joy of the season. Put down the snow globe and be part of the scene in historic downtown Long Grove. Maybe you will find a snow globe in one of the shops, hold it in the palm of your hand, and see the world a bit differently.

I remember the good old days when Long Grove was always busy. Sadly, today, it’s only a shadow of its former self, with so many of the stores closed and the buildings and sidewalks falling into disrepair. Surprisingly, people still flock there for the occasional festival but unfortunately it’s not enough to keep many of the businesses afloat. I spoke to one of the store owners last year who said that high rents, a poor economy and covid have just about sounded the death knell for the downtown shopping district of Long Grove.

Yes, it used to be more lively. Let’s hope it can modernize a bit and return to a more healthy state!
