“This is my favorite ice cream!”
At Streets of Woodfield in Schaumburg, Illinois, we have two treat choices in close proximity. Kurimu is a Japanese shop of premium cold pack and soft serve ice cream, and other treats. The quality raises the lid and moves the spoon. You might also expect some kind of whimsical trend toward kawaii (cute) culture. In the recent past, Kurimu has promoted Peanuts with Snoopy, Charlie Brown, and all the loveable Charles Schulz characters. This year we see a cross collaboration with Miffy, a kawaii(!) little girl bunny from the Dutch artist Dick Bruna. And just a few steps away stands the other treat choice, Te’Amo Boba Bar, presenting boba, desserts, tea, and more. This new gathering place for healthy and fun refreshments started in Chicago by a group of young Asian American women, who wanted to share their culture of enjoying tea with family and friends. Between these two places, we really have one choice.
It’s both.
At Kurimu, Lisa, my mom and I scooped up a taste of Japan. My mom wanted to try Kurimu for a while. I had heard from a coworker that this was the place to be and the ice cream to beat. That was enough for me.
My mom: “Miso and Brown Sugar ice cream in a Lavender cone is very refreshing! I first taste the saltiness of miso, then the sweetness of brown sugar. This is a surprisingly nice combination!” Lisa: “Purple Yam ice cream in a cone of Salted Blue Corn looks so vibrant! The ice cream tastes decadent but light. The cone is very crisp with a subtle hint of saltiness. This is my favorite ice cream!” And me: “Dalgona Coffee with Black Sugar (pictured in the header) shows off a swirly palette topped with a generous foam! The coffee tastes mellow and smooth. The brown sugar adds a nice caramel flavor. I want to go back for hard pack!” If you ever come across a slogging donkey with a pint of Kurimu ice cream dangling tantalizingly in front of its forehead, that would be me.
“The coffee tastes mellow and smooth!”
After a series of small steps outside Kurimu, we worked up quite the appetite. We were ready for drinks, donuts, and desserts. At Te’Amo, our lineup was served up in short order. We shared the colorful sunset Mango Lemonade that surprisingly kept its layers even as we poured. A note for next time, stirred not shaken would be ideal given the effervescence. Mom: “Mango Lemonade with 75% sweetness is perfect!” Lisa: “This is beautiful and refreshing!” And me: “The Mango Lemonade is amazing to behold and impressively stayed together in colorful layers!” To top it off, each drink can be customized at the self-checkout kiosk.
Next we ran circles around the Mochi Donuts. Mom: “The Mango Mochi Donut’s texture is light, bouncy and stretchy. The glaze balances everything with sweetness. This is my favorite donut!” Lisa: “Matcha is surprisingly light with rich flavor!” And me: “Ube is stretchy, light and satisfyingly sweet!” Every donut was wonderfully light with the right touch of sweetness.
“This is my favorite donut!”
Te’Amo gave us pause at the kiosk as we ordered desserts. There were many choices and the variety was unexpected. After a few swipes and chirps (from the kiosk, not me) we made our selections. Mom: “Matcha Coconut Jelly Dessert is creamy like a panna cotta! I taste light sweetness with the earthiness of matcha!” Lisa: “The Tiramisu Basque Cheesecake has a perfectly light sweetness!” And me: “Strawberry Yogurt Cake is moist chiffon cake with a nice middle layer of more whipped yogurt cream and fresh strawberries!” It’s not like there wouldn’t be a next time.

The day could have been ordinary, but Kurimu and Te’Amo put a bow on it above the standard. If you visit Chicago or the suburbs, you can’t beat Streets of Woodfield in Schaumburg, Illinois for hosting both places in such close proximity. Even if you can only do one, you’ve already shared the love. Kurimu: “We’re excited to share our love!” Te’Amo: “Share a tea, fall in love.”

We would start our way at the top, and go down from left to right! (And put in some extra miles thereafter.) 😳

Kurimu and Te’Amo sounds like great places to visit. We are going to be in the suburbs of Chicago next weekend for a wedding, not far from Schaumburg. Maybe we’ll get a chance to visit. Your wrote great reviews with beautiful photos.
