Lisa, my mom, and I made our first visit together at Gregorys Coffee in Woodfield Mall. This was my mom’s third visit, and the first for Lisa and me. My mom had retold her previous visits to us about such distinctive coffee with a personal touch from the owner and baristas. Wanting a jolt from the doldrums of gentrified chains, we made a break away from the grind for a fresh start.
The joint was jumpin’. Seasonal and holiday food and drinks were lighting up the boards, and cool merch was hot and going out of stock. We headed to the pass with a full menu of our own new favorites. My mom ordered: Biscotti Testarossa and Pistachio Muffin. Lisa set the baseline with: Peppermint Mocha and Spinach Ricotta Croissant. My eyes were big for: Iced Black Forest Latte, Triple Chocolate Chip Cookie, and Rainbow Cookie (like a Holiday Triple-Layer Cake). We found a corner table and settled in the relaxed environment.
Were we becoming ”Gregulars” or were we already until now when we made it official? A “Gregular” is someone who is ambitious, hustling toward unique pursuits. We’re anything but regular.
“This is holiday fun!”
We took some fun holiday snaps near the seasonal merch and decor. People flowed in and out in a busy mall. There were other coffee places competing for their attention, but what brought them here? Was it the coffee quality? The expertly handcrafted drinks? The fresh baked goods made daily right here? The personal touch instead of a faceless, blinking menu board with a disembodied voice crackling through a speaker?
Everything arrived on time, and we dove right into everything. It turned out that my mom always orders the Biscotti Testarossa. She wasn’t just a “Gregular,” she was “Gregarious!”
We shared our thoughts between bites and sips. My mom: “The Biscotti Testarossa is nice and smooth! I taste the coffee strong at the finish. This is my third time! The Pistachio Muffin pairs well with Gregorys Coffee! All of the baked goods are made right here. Everything is worth a little wait!” Lisa: “The Peppermint Mocha has a rich flavor! The amount of sweetness is just right. This is the best peppermint mocha that I ever tasted! The Spinach Ricotta Croissant is delicious! It has the perfect amount of cheese and spinach. I really like the flaky crust!” And me: “The Iced Black Forest Latte coffee is amazing! I taste the excellent quality of Gregorys Coffee. The flavor is deep! The Triple Chocolate Chip Cookie has candy cane pieces on top! The outer part is crisp while the inside is soft. This is how a cookie should be! The Rainbow Cookie (or Holiday Triple-Layer Cake) has the classic taste of almond or cherry! The flavor is very Italian. This is holiday fun!”

We had ourselves a good time at Gregorys Coffee. And all the places we visited. This is the final post of The Simple Luxuries. We had ourselves a good time, didn’t we? Thanks to you and all the places visited, we found “The Luxury in Simple Things.”
We hope to see you again in the future—sometime, somewhere. I don’t want to say, “Ta-ta,” so let’s leave it at “Tala.”
