There are countless ways to dine. Besides the conventional, guests can have food cooked tableside or on their table, they can cook their own food, meals can be enjoyed under simulated thunderstorms, or food can be playfully tossed into open mouths, with everyone agape in amazement.
I have but I don’t want any more.
I want to have my own food as I like it.

Some people get stuck in a loop of the same old. They realize they’ve come to the end of the road when they pull up to the same forgettable place with unremarkable fare; and, suddenly, they wonder, “How did I get here?” Instead of letting your days go by, same as it ever was, shake up your senses by discovering Umami, a taste experience beyond the five basic definitions: salty, sweet, bitter, sour, and savory. It’s time to shake up and wake up. Kaiten zushi (rotating sushi) at Sushi Station is in motion. What comes next?

One thing about sushi is that it’s a challenge to estimate how much sushi can be eaten. Buffet sushi is not ideal for so many reasons. Sushi super duper deluxe dinners on serving platters are a classic example of more is a chore. Sushi is enjoyed best the way a hummingbird moves from flower to flower, sampling a little of a lot. Kaiten zushi brings the flavors to you, so much variety, and none of it a chore. Feel not stuffed, but satisfied. Sushi Station is the best place to try sushi or kaiten zushi for the very first time.
My mom, Lisa and I visited Sushi Station in Elgin, newer and larger than the original location in Rolling Meadows, for sushi dinner. This was my mom’s first visit to the Elgin location. She was impressed by the size and service. I was equally impressed by the density and variety of everything on the conveyor belt. There were very few gaps. Everything looked enticing. Lisa was excited by the high end sushi there for the taking.
We started grabbing plates. I was almost literally spinning plates while trying to take photos and pose sushi between my Ohashi (chopsticks). The plates were stacking up, we were filling up, and so we thought it was a good time to grab desserts. Traditional Japanese desserts like Mitarashi Dango were plentiful as well as contemporary cakes and other sweets. From start to finish, we thoroughly enjoyed our circuit while the conveyor belt and more guests kept coming and going.
I asked everyone for their thoughts about Sushi Station. My mom: “Sushi Station is a good choice to try sushi for the first time. They have a nice variety of sushi. This is a fun experience. And they have a lot of nice desserts!” Lisa: “I like the conveyor belt at Sushi Station because you never know what will be next. Sometimes you find a nice surprise. All of the sushi is so fresh. Kaiten zushi is the best way to enjoy sushi because sometimes you discover what’s best that day by trying different plates. This is my favorite way to eat sushi!”

It was time to play favorites. My mom: “My favorite sushi are Hotate (scallops) and Escolar ‘Super White Tuna.’ The Escolar has a smooth taste with natural oils. My favorite dessert is Lemon Raspberry Cheesecake. It’s very light!” Lisa: “I like Spicy Scallops best. The chili oil and the sesame seeds with the smooth, sweet Hotate are amazing. The Triple Chocolate Mousse Cake is my favorite dessert. It’s light and the perfect finish!” And me: “I like Anago best of all today. It’s so tender and fluffy. The sweet glaze brings out the light, natural sweetness of the Conger eel. For dessert, my favorite is Mitarashi Dango. The Mochi is firm and satisfying. And the Mitarashi glaze is the epitome of Umami!”
Even if you move on to other Japanese restaurants and sushi houses, your line will always stop again at Sushi Station. It’s well marked on the map because it’s everyone’s favorite destination on the local or express. You’ll know how and why you got there. It’ll be obvious as water at the bottom of the ocean.
