With the chill of early spring in the air, Valerie, Julie, Mark, Lisa, and I spirited away on a beer run that distilled itself into something stronger. Wait. Wasn’t there a commercial back in the day that pushed hard butterscotch candy from a well-meaning old man to a bewildered kid? Sorry for the abrupt shift, but as the designated driver on every elbow bender, I need something to set me straight.

Twenty-eight is the number of miles between Chicago and Highwood, home of 28 Mile Distilling Company.
Outdoor seating is well kept with Edison lights and a cozy fireplace.
Rooftop seating is also available in the warmer months.
Elf Butterscotch Bourbon Whiskey, Debonair Bourbon, 28 Mile Gin, 28 Mile Vodka, and more start their distillation in sight of the tasting room.
Testing and tasting ensure the quality of every spirit.
The Rose Miller Tasting Room is a gathering place for mixologists and the debonair.
Happy Hour is good from four to seven at five a pop.

Elf Butterscotch Bourbon Whiskey is so smooth that a bottle will slip into your purchase bag.
Prosciutto Caprese Roll: fresh mozzarella, tomato, basil, arugula, lemon vinaigrette wrapped in prosciutto. “Yummy for the palate!”
Jarlsberg cheese dip served with artisan crackers. “Texture like crab dip with a rich, creamy flavor!”
El Corazon: blood orange, pomegranate, passion fruit, soda water. “Tropical and bright—a vacation in a glass!”
Moscow Mule: made with 28 Mile Gin, and their secret ginger mix. “Phenomenal punch of ginger and smooth gin!”
Elf-spresso Martini: made with Elf Butterscotch Bourbon Whiskey, espresso, and Mr. Black coffee liqueur. “This is my favorite!” Said everyone.
Chicago Pizza: Italian beef, sausage, giardiniera. “I like the thin crust, and the giardiniera is a nice touch!”
Veggie Pizza: spinach, mushroom, onion, green peppers. “I’m new to New Haven-style pizza with thin crust and the right amount of toppings—BIG fan!”
New Haven-style pizza is famous for its thin crust baked in a coal-fired oven.
Spirits built this bar, and people come for miles.
Racks of barrels age spirits in the Bourbon Lounge, where local acts stir up a ruckus.
Many a night features a band with a new sound or a blast from the past.
Wander through the old building of 28 Mile Distilling Company and find yourself in a time shift.
With so much history and so many spirits about, you might give yourself a start.
Elk Butterscotch Bourbon Whiskey was originally a holiday treat; but, now it’s always on the calendar thanks to its lasting popularity.

After the dust settled, Julie said it best: “It’s interesting to try five different spirits at one time! My favorites are 28 Mile Gin and Elf Butterscotch Bourbon Whiskey. The Gin has a very welcoming citrus aroma, and the taste is very smooth. I can drink this straight! The Elf is going home with me. The hint of Butterscotch is awesome! It’s light and not too sweet. This is definitely an Elf that I will keep on the shelf!”
