We’re past New Year’s Day, so may I take a moment to break:
a) A forgotten pumpkin on your porch
b) That turkey wishbone you dropped on the floor
c) The crisp $100 bill you got as a gift
d) Your New Year’s resolution
e) All of the above
f) None of the above
It always comes full circle every year.

“The Biscuit is fluffy with a crunchy texture!”
A half dozen of us vs. a half dozen of donuts! Who would win? Our friend Tracy and her boyfriend Larry, our friend Scott, Lisa, my mom, and I made the much anticipated visit to Joe Donut. This was the home of handmade everything from their hands to yours. Walk up or drive-thru, our morning could’ve been as slow or fast as we wanted. After we studied the menu, we sat down and barely got the seats warm when our food came in hot.
Tracy ordered the Burnt Cheese Scramble with Smoked Bacon, and sides of Breakfast Potatoes and Biscuit: “Impressive. The Burnt Cheese Scramble with Smoked Bacon is loaded with thick pieces of bacon. This is a good amount of food. The Breakfast Potatoes remind me of hush puppies—crispy and very good. The Biscuit is fluffy with a crunchy texture. I like this sweet butter!” Larry chose the Breakfast Burrito: “The Breakfast Burrito has everything I want for breakfast. The sriracha mayo brings some heat. This is a highly recommend!” Scott wanted the Burnt Cheese Omelette with Smoked Bacon, and sides of Breakfast Potatoes and Pancakes: “The Burnt Cheese Omelette with Smoked Bacon is one of the better omelettes I’ve ever had. I really like the burned cheese on top. This is stuffed with thick bacon. The Breakfast Potatoes are some of the best ever. They’re crispy like cheese curds or seasoned potatoes. The Pancakes are fluffy and a meal in itself. It’s not very often when I can’t finish my breakfast. The other half is going home with me!” My mom split with me the Veg-Head Biscuit: “The Veg-Head Biscuit is light and crispy with a buttery taste. I like the sriracha mayo that gives it a nice kick. The avocado slice is thick and rich. Half is very satisfying!” Lisa asked for the Gimme My Regular Biscuit: “Gimme My Regular Biscuit is incredibly tender, and everything is so fresh. The eggs are so fluffy. The bacon is thicker than I expected. I can’t stop eating this!” I liked my Veg-Head Biscuit: “Veg-Head Biscuit came in hot fast, maybe less than five minutes. The biscuit is tender and fluffy, while the crust is crisp. The sriracha sauce has the right strength of heat. The thick avocado slice is a cool and creamy playoff. Slow down to enjoy the fluffy egg and buttery touch. Half is just right for me (and my donut)!”
And my Iced Caramel High-Rise: “Iced Caramel High-Rise has a smooth ratio of sweet cream to coffee. Joe Donut should put ‘Coffee’ in their name too!” With some of us reserving half our breakfasts to save room for donuts, we appropriately ordered a half dozen, one for each. Tracy let Larry choose their to-go donut, which turned out to be the classic Chocolate Cake. He also decided on the Maple Bacon: “I’m eating the Maple Bacon Donut like I haven’t eaten in a week. I can’t eat anymore but I want another bite. The Chocolate Cake Donut is my to-go, go-to donut!” Now there’s a quote I can chew on.
“The Chocolate Cake Donut is my to-go, go-to donut!”
Scott was drawn to the Pistachio Old Fashioned Donut: “The Pistachio Old Fashioned Donut is something new for me. I’ve never had pistachio with a donut before, but these are two of my favorites. They go very well together!” My mom spared nothing for the Smore’s Donut: “The Smore’s Donut has tender cake. On the Smore’s topping, I taste bitterness of chocolate and creaminess of marshmallow. I like Smore as a donut!” Lisa fancied the Red Velvet Donut: “The Red Velvet Donut has a semi-dense cake that I like. The top glaze is fun and festive!” And I made the Sophie’s choice of the Blueberry Lemon Crumble Donut: “Blueberry Lemon Crumble Donut is lemony bright in the cake. There’s a generous helping of blueberry jam almost spilling over in the center top!” We were all caffeinated, sugared up, and dressed up with nowhere to go.
Right now, Joe Donut is centered in Chicagoland. More locations keep popping up, so find yourself any reason to walk up or drive-thru for “scratch bakery” and “strong coffee.” This is part old-fashioned donut shop, and part right-place for the right-time, and the time is now. I been in the right place!
“It’s not very often when I can’t finish my breakfast!”
If you’ve kept up with The Simple Luxuries, then you’re probably sporting jeggings with drawstrings. I hereby resolve to follow up an eating post with an activity write-up. I might not be able to get you out of the hole, but you won’t fall any deeper.

We’ve had donuts (or doughnuts) from various shops over the years. They’ve ranged from traditional to funnel cake style to just all right. Where would Joe Donut rank? You can keep your pumpkin, wishbone, and hundo. It’s only January, and I resolve to do this year right.
Full duz next time just becuz!

Yes, “decadent” is the perfect word for Joe Donut! I hope Joe Donut comes your way or you somehow find your way at one in the suburbs! And you know, these donuts just happen to fall into our mouths, just like that.

Great post on info – so family left in Chicago, but I may, someday, get there again – or near there or a place they open up ….That said, I LOVE their menu + case sections marked – Menu names/pricing is transparent AND I wouldn’t have to hold up the line by asking, “What’s this one fall under, on the menu awesome, unique marketing/names?” – LOL I love it when biz’s are fun, clever AND make it easy to order, for a newbie, too! LOL

What a great reply!! Thank you so much for reading and doing your due diligence. I have the sneaky suspicion you will own the place and have a great time at Joe Donut when you blow in to the Chicago area next time! ☕️🍩💨

The unremarkable exterior of Jo Donut does not suggest what culinary treasures hide on the inside! I like the fact that one can buffer the sugar high from the scrumptious donuts by first indulging in a high-protein savory meal. 😊

We should never judge a donut shop by its exterior! No wiser words have been spoken. 🍩
